My parents had a true wartime wedding. They met, two weeks later got engaged , two and a half months later married , and 2 weeks later Dad got orders and shipped out for two and a half years. Mom , Mary Margaret Bracewell from Burlington Iowa, was a lieutenant in the Navy Reserves , Dad , Norbert Vincent Woods, a lieutenant in the Marines, was from Schenectady, New York. Given the oddities of the Navy despite that they were both lieutenants, she outranked him. They had a formal military wedding with honor guard. Mom resigned her commission and lived with her mother in law . Dad was sent to the South Pacific. He was stationed at Parker Ranch on the Big Island of Hawaii. Dad was in the Marines 5th Division, 28th regiment 3rd battalion H company. The 28th Marines were the Suribachi company , the 2nd battalion went up the mountain the 3rd was responsible for the brutal work of securing the base and western flank of the mountain. H company had landed at Green Beach and had driven across the neck of the island . After capturing Suribachi dad witnessed the iconic flag raising that is now seen as an enduring symbol of the marines. The casualty rate of officers on Iwo was 80% and dad received a field promotion to Captain that stuck with him after the battle. After Suribachi the 28th fought to the North through the meat grinder through sulfur pits and rocky gorges. Dad also witnessed and defended against the famous Banzai charge. After Iwo Dad spent the rest of the war in the occupation of Japan. Finally shipped home and reunited with Mary Margaret they had a wonderful life together, producing 13 children, and after 70 years of marriage dying within a year of each other,
