    • 1930 - Growing Up in Sapulpa

MarkD submitted on November 6, 2025blog.jpeg

Home was a very warm and secure place.  I was happy as a small child.  Gloria and I slept in the back bedroom with mom and Dad.  Allen had the front bedroom.    Wheen we were small, our house was heated by 3 gas stoves.  All were lighted by match as was our hot water heater.  No thermostat control.  We always turned them off at night because Dad was afraid of the fire hazard of the open flame gas stoves.  House was uninsulated.  At night it got quite cold in winter.  During the day on cold days, the walls would sweat because of all the water vapor released by the...

    • 1930 - Goats and Chickens

MarkD submitted on November 6, 2025blog.jpeg

Dad had hay fever and was allergic to cow’s milk so he decided we needed some goats.  We got them when I was about 4.  Dad and Allen built a goat house behind the garage.  Later added a shed and Feed storage building.  The goat yard was enclosed by a picket fence.  One time a goat was killed by hanging itself by it’s lower jaw bone off of the pointed top of a picket.    The folks would go to country frequently to buy feed.  They usually got bales of alfalfa.  The goats were smart.  They could unlatch the latch which hung by a rope on outside of the goat...

    • 1930 - Playtime

The State Fair Grounds was at 8th street and Eastern which was a little over a mile from our house. During fair time they had a fire works display in the grandstand.  Gloria and I frequently would climb up the ladder and sit on the roof to watch the fireworks.  We also went to the fairgrounds by ourselves on students day and got in free.  Would roam around and visit all the agriculture exhibits and sit on the tractors.   We would listen to The Lone Ranger, Jack Armstrong, Little Orphan Annie and other serial radio programs after coming home from school.  They were real vivid to us.  One time Little...

    • 1930 - Visiting Our Grandparents

MarkD submitted on November 6, 2025blog.jpeg

We frequently went to Enid to visit.  Grand Ma and Grand Pa Davidson's house at 710 E. Chestnut, was always a neat place.  It was clean and they had nice things even though they were fairly poor.  They had cherry trees and made pies often.  They were so good.  Remember they had nice Christmas trees.  But they were very particular about not letting anyone touch the ornaments.  I got scolded several times for that.  They had a gas floor furnace.  It had an observation port just below the grill.  You could look down and see the blue flame.  I thought that was awesome.  Grand Ma Robinson at this time lived...

    • 1930 - Odd Jobs

MarkD submitted on November 6, 2025blog.jpeg

Saved my money from milking goats.  Got 10 cents a week I think.  When was in 5th grade, I had saved enough money that could buy a Wards Hawthorn Bike for $17.45.  Still have it.  I was very proud of the bike. Enjoyed riding all over the area within a 3 or 4 block radius.   Allen had a paper route.  I would occasionally go with him to deliver papers.  Had to wake up about 5 AM and go to the local delivery building.  Helped sort and fold papers and then ran route.  I would pull my little red wagon and Allen would throw the papers at the houses.  It...

    • 1930 - Swimming

MarkD submitted on November 6, 2025blog.jpeg

When I was 4, mother enrolled me with Gloria in YWCA swimming.  Dad remembers he and mother went down to watch us swim by sitting in the balcony of the Y swim pool.  We learned fast.  Soon were on advanced team.  I was one of the dwarfs in a program portraying Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs.  Had to swim the length of the pool several times.  In at least one part there were oncoming swimmers in our lane and we had to dive and swim under water while they swam above.     Mom and Dad frequently took Gloria and me to Lincoln Park Lake to swim after Dad came...
