    • Leaving for Oklahoma Territory

MEADEP_1I can remember that Papa went down to Oklahoma to see about trading the farm and returned.  One statement that I can remember that I can remember he made is "They have red dirt down there".  I never had seen any red dirt.  In Kansas the soil was all black.  That's all of the things I can think of that happened in Kansas.

In April 1907, we moved to Oklahoma Territory.  (It became a state in November, 1907).  When we moved, I can't remember seeing Papa leave.  He left first.  I don't remember how long before we moved.  Anyway, he moved the household goods and animals in a box car.  After he left, we stayed at Grandpa's until we left.  Probably this was only long enough for Papa to get things moved to the farm.  I suppose we had nothing to live on in the house.  All of our household things were gone.

By this time, Grandma had died and soon after, Grandpa had moved to town, (Yates Center).

One thing that stuck with me all these years was that it was before daylight and we were getting ready to leave on the train for Oklahoma, from Grandpa's house.  There was a carriage out front that I think they called a bus.  It was something like a stagecoach, having a driver who sat up front above the passengers.  It was pulled by horses (of course) and it had  "coal oil" lamps with glass enclosures on the front and sides of the carriage.  We had had breakfast and I heard the bus driver calling outside.  I couldn't hear what he said but someone said "hurry, he's calling all aboard".  After that I only remember of going out to the bus and seeing it and getting in it.  I don't remember the ride to the railroad station or seeing the train at that time.  Perhaps I was asleep.  We probably arrived at Orlando in Logan Co.  I remember Papa walking down along the train on a brick walk to meet us and help us off the train.

I am not sure why Mama and Papa moved to Oklahoma.  However, I have an idea.  I believe they had 40 acres in Woodson County, KS.  I don't suppose there as much chance of making a good living there.  When they moved to Oklahoma I suppose the land was much cheaper and I think it was 80 acres.  Maybe they figured they would raise twice as much on it.  I am quite sure that Papa didn't have any extra cash to spend so he managed to trade 80 acres in Oklahoma for 40 acres in Kansas.  There was a lot of talk about up-coming statehood.  I don't know if that influenced Papa any.  Papa had a shot gun he took to Oklahoma.  But I don't remember him using it for hunting.  However he may have.

I suppose it was a one day trip down to Logan County.  I wish I knew for sure but I believe it was Orlando where we went to.  The farm was located 8 miles east and 1 mile south of Marshal, 7 miles west and 1 mile south of Orlando and 9 miles north of Mulhall.     I am not sure whether it was straight South or not.  That is the directions I had in my memory when we went back up there in 1949 and I didn't have any trouble finding the place.  I think I got the directions by hearing the folks talk about it.  We lived there about two years.  I don't remember anything about the trip to Oklahoma but I do remember arriving.
