    • Our House and Farm

Papa farmed the land.  I don't remember seeing much of Papa, so he must have been working in the field quite a lot.  Corn is the only crop I remember. I am sure we had a garden but I remember nothing about it.  We had horses, cows and I think, some pigs.  Of course we had chickens.

Our house was 1 story.  In about 1949, which was the first (and only) time I ever went back there, the house had been raised and a story built underneath it.

I remember well, the kerosene lamps.  (We called them "coal oil".)  We used them until I was about 16 or 17 years old.  There was a living room on the street side of the house.  There was a front fence with a gate.   There was no plumbing.  I remember the outhouse very well.  We had a "dug" well.  Water was "drawn" with a bucket, rope and pulley.  I had a box with several dolls in it.  Some of them were homemade, I think.  I don't remember this, but pictures show me wearing dresses at perhaps 3 or 4 years of age.

I think I was about a year old when I was out in the barn lot chasing a horse, when the horse kicked me in the head.  I was unconscious for quite a while.   Grandfather had a dog.  I liked to play with him.  I must have done something that offended him because he bit me in the corner of my left eye.  Sometime later I heard a gunshot.  Mamma said that Grandpa had shot the dog.

I think we had 3 horses.  I remember one specifically.  It was a  mare named Lizzy (a bay mare as I recall).   Mamma would use Lizzy with the buggy to go to town.  That was before Mabel was born, so I was  under 4 years old
