    • Chicago and Lake Michigan

The next day, we didn't get up much before noon.  We went down and made arrangements for Virgie's mother to return to Enid.  It was about 5 in the evening when she left for Enid.   We left the same night for Chicago.  The first thing we did after we arrived in Chicago was to walk over to see the lake.  We never had seen a large body of water like that.  Then we went to a restaurant and got breakfast.  Then we bought a paper and began to look for a place to stay.  We found this room with kitchen privileges at 4611 Vincennes Ave.  Then I believe we ordered our trunk delivered.  It was delivered by a horse drawn dray.  I think it took about a whole day.

We hadn't been in Chicago long before Virgie decided she wanted to work there, too.  She went one day and they gave her a job, mostly filing blue prints, (I think), a job entirely foreign to her.  She never went back, not even to check out or collect her pay.

We took a one day trip to Milwaukee.  I think we got back late in the evening or at night.  It was quite an interesting experience for us.  We had never experienced any rough water.  We had never been on any large body of water before.  The boat was fairly large, I think.  I cannot remember the name of it now.  It had a good sized salon.  The waves were probably 8 or 10 feet high.  There were many passengers sitting around in the salon.  Many of them,  especially the children were vomiting.  There were 3 or 4 sailors busy mopping the floor.  (Robert:  Did you get sick?)  No, I think we might have but we hunted the best location, about the middle of the ship and hung around there mostly and managed to avoid much discomfort.

We stayed in Chicago for 8 weeks.  Then we went back to Enid.  We spent quite a bit of money, about all that we could, I guess.  I made pretty good money and we spent it all, mostly sight-seeing.  We left Enid with $125 and returned with $25.
