The Move to Oklahoma
MarkD published on October 3, 2025Aunt Lizzy and Uncle John visited us in Kansas and then they told us all about the farm they had there in Oklahoma, at Garber, and then they talked my Mamma and Papa into thinking it might be nice to live there. They decided they would go down to Oklahoma and see how they liked it. Mamma and Papa went. Anyhow, I can't remember how mamma got to Garber. Any way, I remember we came to Oklahoma. We came down to visit my Aunt Lizzy and Uncle John. Mamma and Papa and Orma and I came down just to see how Oklahoma was and to visit Aunt Lizzy and Uncle John in Garber. As I remember, Mother stayed there and Orma and I went back with Papa to Osage City, Kansas. Then Daddy decided that he would bring all the things down and move to Oklahoma. /ao, he got a box car and I went in the box car with him as we came down. I know Orma was with us too. Anyway, I came in the box car with Papa and maybe the rest of the girls did too. I just can't remember too well. Any way it was nice. When the train stopped so he could get some food, Daddy would get us something to eat. Of course it didn't take us very long to get there. I believe just one night was all, daytime and just one night. Any way, we got down there and Papa bought the farm and we moved every thing to the farm. I don't know how many cows or horses he brought but I know he brought some live stock. It was mainly just the furniture and the things we had that we just had to keep as far as I can remember. I remember what ever animals it was......now maybe there weren't any animals, I am not too sure. We didn't have any trouble with them at all. I think I was happy about the move and I think the family was happy about the move.
After we moved to Oklahoma, I milked the cow and I drove to town to get anything we needed to get. We had it really nice there. My Mamma took the very best care of us she could. My Daddy worked pretty hard of course, making a living for all of the family. Mamma and Papa didn't have any family living close to us until we moved to Enid. Then Uncle John and Aunt Lizzy lived at Garber. That is Uncle John and Aunt Lizzy Cooper. They had Earl, Pauline, Lucille and Francis.
I remember we had a pretty bad storm on the farm and we had a small little stream of water on the place there and....that is on the farm close to Garber. I remember all of us standing out watching and wondering if the creek would get too high up and get too close to the house. And Papa and Mamma were quite worried and we all waited but it didn't come anyway near the house.
