Visit to Florida and Fishing
MarkD published on October 4, 2025By the way, there is one thing I just happened to think of and I am glad I thought of it. Because I want you to talk about your visit to Florida. GM: Oh I went down to....that was another sister...I lived in Alabama yet....and another sister of hers....well she just had one sister and one brother. Well this sister lived in Florida with her husband, Uncle Ligh we called him. And a brother lived in Kansas. And the sister came up there and wanted me to go home with them. I don't know why they always had to pick on me to go home with them. The other girls I heard them complain that I got to go every place. Dad: You were probably the cutest. GM: Because I was the orphan, you see. That was the main thing. Any, I went down there with Uncle Liza and Aunt Betty in an ox wagon. Dad: Ox wagon. GM: Ox wagon. Yes sir, it was an ox wagon. And Uncle Liza was very profane. He wasn't a very nice man that way. He would kind of swere as much as he wanted to. Anyway, we wasn't used to that around our place. And Aunt Betty was one of these cowed kind of...she just let him boss you know. She was pretty head strong too but any way, she was used to it. She had just one little boy. His name was Willie. And he was an awful cute little boy.
When I was down there, he was a fisherman. So aunt Betty and I always had to go...well he had a hired man too to help him fish. And aunt Betty would have to go and help with the fishing...with the seine nets you know. See he had a boat and he sat up in the bow of the boat with a rod and he watched for the fish. Schools of fish or what ever they called them. And when he would say jump, we had to jump. We jumped out in the water...grabbed the end of the seine net and jumped out in the water. Well, I didn't like any of that at all. (Laugh) Dad: Could you swim? GM: Oh no. Dad: Well what he was supposed to do was have you jump in water that was shallow enough for you to hit bottom. GM: Yes that is right and we would drag out the fish. We would drag one end of the seine net while he and his hired man dragged the other. Dad: Where would you drag it. Toward the shore? GM Toward the shore. Sometimes they would get a whole lot of fish in it. And he had a fish hop where he would cut off their head and fix them up, you know. Dad: How big a fish would you get? GM: Oh we got some great long ones called red fish and blue fish all were good fish. Dad: About 2 ft long or something like that. GM: Oh yes. And there were mullots or something like that. All sorts of fish they got but the choice ones were the red and blue fish. And the blue fish were hard to beat. They were awfully good. Dad: I think one time, didn't you jump from the wrong side. GM: One time we was at the edge of the ocean...I think it was in the ocean...it was blue water. Dad: anyway, this was where you started out was in the Gulf, wasnt' it? GM: Yes. Mostly in the Gulf. But if I am not mistaken that was in the ocean. You know just along the edge. Well one time that he was going along there already and he said jump. Well I guess I wasn't quick enough. So when I jumped I got in deep water. (Laugh) Dad: Over your head? GM: No I didn't get in deep water but he had such a fit and made me get back in that boat right quick. I guess I was still holding to the boat. Dad: Oh I see. GM: anyway, he got me back in the boat and gave me a good bauling our. For not jumping soon enough. Dad: With profanity too? GM: I suppose he did but anyway, I didn't like any part of that fishing business.
