Preheat oven to 350 ℉. Grease and flour a 9x13 inch baking pan.
In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the milk and molasses. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and cayenne pepper. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients alternately with the milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Stir until just combined.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Let cool completely before frosting.
