A beautiful weekend

Hope all of you had a fine weekend. We've enjoyed everyone's recent blogs. We have three growing bluebird babies. They're starting to get the blue feathers. Unfortunately, I guess, we have a beautiful family of 6 or 7 foxes living under our corn crib. We're fearful for our two outside cats so will try to hassle the foxes. Had a beautiful boat trip across Lake George last night. Our friends the Newlins bought a camp near Diamond Point. Some of you may want to attend the Lake George Opera's yearly boat trip on Father's day.

You can never go home again. Our home no longer exists in York, but many fine memories do. We are engaged in a whirlwind visit to Chuck's parents, to dentist, opticians, a tire shop, and friends. All good during this lovely time of the Year in southcentral Pennsylvania. We drove Thursday evening and all day Friday from Sylva to Princeton to visit Chuck's sister and our children.All are well. We enjoyed a beer and ice cream in artsy Lambertsville, NJ on the Delaware River with our children. On Sunday we arrived in York after short stops for birds at Middle Creek Wildlife Mangement Area to see bobolinks, willow flycatchers, and a Pennsylvania eagle. We are enjoying a stay with Mom & Dad Strehl. This morning we will visit the Central Market House to buy some "organic" granola and fixings for a dinner or two. We drove past our old house which looks fine. We still have friends to visit and various chores to accomplish before moving on to near Gettysburg latter in the week to visit our hiking buddies. Saturday we will be returning toward Carolina. Yesterday we accomplished the necessary stop at our storage locker to obtain essentials for our stay in a house the rest of this year.

This was no way to say thanks. I don't really understand why we live in an age in which we feel compelled to spoof the beliefs of the followers of the great religions. Why are we doing that? Why does Hollywood consider this progressive as opposed to primitive, like a pre-Columbian tribe attacking the tribe next door for worshiping the wrong spirits? "The DaVinci Code" could still triumph at the box office, but it has lost its cachet, and the air of expectation that surrounded it. Its creators have not been rewarded but embarrassed. Good. They should be." Ms. Noonan is a contributing editor of The Wall Street Journal and author of "John Paul the Great: Remembering a Spiritual Father," (Penguin, 2005), which you can order from the OpinionJournal bookstore. We made it! Yes, we walked 174.5 miles from the south end of Great Smoky Mountains National Park across the Fontana Dam, dozens of peaks and gaps, the border into Georgia, and past the famed Amicalola Falls to the parking lot where we had left our car 20 days ago. We were blessed with cool to chilly spring weather, an abundance of wildflowers, good company, and good health along the way. We regreted stopping because our bodies are now wonderfully conditioned for backpacking. We hope to keep them that way through this year as we try to finish the A.T. across the Smoky Mountains and to Hot Springs.

We are now on the go again to New Jersey to visit our children and then stop at York to visit there and recover clothes and other personal items for our stay in Sylva, NC. We have just showered and checked in at Goose Creek Cabins a few miles down the road from the A.T. Bathing is so-o wonderful when you haven't done it for a few days. The hike continues very well. The weather has been good, for a rain forest. In fact most of our rain has been at night and the past three days have been beautiful. The nights have been cool with 35-45 degree mornings and 50-60 degree afternoons. A bit chilly when we are not walking, but great for the trail. We are at slightly lower elevations now, but the trees are still just leafing out on the ridges. The wildflowers are varied and abundant. So too has been the poison ivy since we dropped down into Georgia. We have to watch that. "Berryman" Chuck has also been paying attention to all of the blackberries and blueberries in bloom. We will have to return to some of these trails in July and August.

We will have to return to some of these trails in July and August. We continue to walk south, against the tide. There are less through-hikers now, but still some. We have recently started meeting more section hikers including a few older couples like us making the same run as us but in the opposite direction. Most of the walkers are "kids" in or briefly after college. Since we only have 30 more miles to go and have walked about 130, we are in better shape and much more experienced than most of them. Some have hiked before, but a few never backpacked a mile before beginning the A.T. Probably only one third will reach Maine. After 3 or four days of walking, most are pretty sore and some badly blistered. We have tried to provide support and advice. We have also met some unusual folks including a retired ultra-marathoner who is doing the A.T. after completing the Pacific Crest Trail and an older hiker with a tall pack and no poles. Chuck called the first "Greyhound" and the second a "dinosaur." The trail is dramatic with substantial changes in elevation, but much of it follows ridgetops and the trails are relatively smooth. With the leaves still thin the trail provides fine views of the surrounding mountains when the weather is clear. We are now trail hardened but still tired and a bit worn after a 10-12 mile hike that includes 2 to 3,000 feet of climbing and the same amount of descent. We are so busy hiking that we have not had any time or energy for exercise. (That's a joke, folks.) We are both looking forward to the end in another four days and regretting the upcoming end to a great walk.
