I recently "subscribed" freely to NPR's podcast from the iTunes music store (you should all check out podcasts if you have an ipod and EVEN if you have only iTUNES - you can still listen to the free podcasts on your computer) it's nice to be able to listen at your own leisure. On this podcast they give the day's "best" segment and today's was on blogging, which I found relevant to this new site. The woman was talking about how her husband and she now measured events by whether or not they were "blog-worthy" and that her husband would be disappointed if she hadn't read his blog before going to bed. It was very funny in parts - if you can get the podcast and download 2/14's installment you should listen to it.

I read this somewhere: " 'A reader tells me that there are more Catholic churches in Las Vegas than casinos. When the offering is received at Mass, it is common for people to put casino chips rather than cash in the baskets. The several parishes send the collected chips to a neighboring Franciscan Monastery, where they are sorted and then cashed in at the casinos they came from. This weekly task is undertaken by those who are called the chip monks.' I apologize. That is really awful. But I needed one more short item for today’s posting. I promise it will not happen again."

Just read the new U of Chicago Magazine article about how the Univ is "looking south to Woodlawn". Great discussion of the history of the neighborhood and what is happening development-wise. Doug's condo is right in the middle of the area they are looking to develope. Very cool. Patty & Tom & Dan, do you guys get the mag? I love reading it, although the articles are always very scholarly and I have to read them s l o w l y. There is another article on the evolution v. creationism debate. I'll save that for later. Fifth week and hydrostatic weighing...

So today I was weighed hydrostatically. Basically what that means is that I weighed myself and my bathing suit outside of the water...to get my naked weight. And then I sat in a chair in an underwater scale and dunked me head underwater. They wait until you blow out all of your air. What this determines is the weight of you fat free mass: organs, muscle and bones. They use this figure to determine a healthy weight range. It was slightly intimidating, but generally helpful and I'm glad I did it. We also now have an NFL player here...I didn't even know his team, but apparently they almost made it to the superbowl.:)

Chuck and Anne invited us to join them for a bird watching outing last Thursday. We arrived at Ding Darling National Wild Life Refuge at dawn. Chuck and Anne spotted 34 different species and shared lots of interesting information about them. One highlight was observing two eagles in hot pursuit of an Osprey attempting to steal his fish. The Osprey’s evasive maneuvers were successful. Attached are pictures of several birds. Resolution for some shots is less than satisfactory because of distance and telephoto limitations. Things are going very well for me now that i finished up with the first wave of exams and papers of the term. on top of that yesterday was Undergraduate Break Day so I did not have to go to my one Friday morning class and instead spent the morning catching up on sleep. The day off is informally known among the students and some with-it professors as "Suicide Prevention Day" since the winter and the school make it an especially tough 11 weeks. This is probably because in the past it has fallen on a day in January that experts have said is the most depressing day. Spent the day off downtown with Mary my girlfriend getting some new clothes which was something i had been putting off and stopped by in Borders to get a Mocha and ended up entering the raffle there for front row tickets to the musical Wicked, since the drawing was only a half hour away, but we didnt win.

Ended up going to the Uno's downtown where Doug, Aunt Cathy, Grandma, and Grandpa, and I celebrated Doug's graduation Dec. 04 for dinner. It's a fun place to go to get historical Chicago deep dish pizza. All in all, I enjoyed my day off which I have to admit was very much needed after a stressful week and a half or so. and as 3-day weekends always go, it seems to be going by fast. but at least I don't have another paper/exam for at least another week So, I saw that my Dad wanted me to share what happened with my biology exam. 5 minutes into the exam, I was still on the first question of 10, the FIRE ALARM went off. the class of a little over 10 had to leave the exams on our desks and shuffle out and down 3 floors to wait outside in the rain. We came back and decided to try to go on with the exam. However, the class period is only 50 minutes long and after a 15 minute delay with the fire alarm we were not able to finish in the normal time. So, some people had to leave for other classes and the rest of us moved to a different room because another class was coming in. On the way, someone pointed out that the others could go and look stuff up before coming back to finish the exam, so the TA said she'd have them write in different pen/pencil and note what they had written/not written. Anyways it was a big fiasco and my prof took this extra weekend to figure out the grading. Going to try and fit in some time to watch some olympics and in march I'm looking forward to the college basketball tournament and the World Baseball Classic. And when I return in the spring I'll be going to the White Sox Opening Day and watch them put up their 2005 World Championship Flag. Very excited about that.
