Things are going very well for me now that i finished up with the first wave of exams and papers of the term. on top of that yesterday was Undergraduate Break Day so I did not have to go to my one Friday morning class and instead spent the morning catching up on sleep. The day off is informally known among the students and some with-it professors as "Suicide Prevention Day" since the winter and the school make it an especially tough 11 weeks. This is probably because in the past it has fallen on a day in January that experts have said is the most depressing day. Spent the day off downtown with Mary my girlfriend getting some new clothes which was something i had been putting off and stopped by in Borders to get a Mocha and ended up entering the raffle there for front row tickets to the musical Wicked, since the drawing was only a half hour away, but we didnt win.

Ended up going to the Uno's downtown where Doug, Aunt Cathy, Grandma, and Grandpa, and I celebrated Doug's graduation Dec. 04 for dinner. It's a fun place to go to get historical Chicago deep dish pizza. All in all, I enjoyed my day off which I have to admit was very much needed after a stressful week and a half or so. and as 3-day weekends always go, it seems to be going by fast. but at least I don't have another paper/exam for at least another week So, I saw that my Dad wanted me to share what happened with my biology exam. 5 minutes into the exam, I was still on the first question of 10, the FIRE ALARM went off. the class of a little over 10 had to leave the exams on our desks and shuffle out and down 3 floors to wait outside in the rain. We came back and decided to try to go on with the exam. However, the class period is only 50 minutes long and after a 15 minute delay with the fire alarm we were not able to finish in the normal time. So, some people had to leave for other classes and the rest of us moved to a different room because another class was coming in. On the way, someone pointed out that the others could go and look stuff up before coming back to finish the exam, so the TA said she'd have them write in different pen/pencil and note what they had written/not written. Anyways it was a big fiasco and my prof took this extra weekend to figure out the grading. Going to try and fit in some time to watch some olympics and in march I'm looking forward to the college basketball tournament and the World Baseball Classic. And when I return in the spring I'll be going to the White Sox Opening Day and watch them put up their 2005 World Championship Flag. Very excited about that.

February 10, 2006 Siesta Bay Resort, Lee County, Florida We are coming close to the end of our time in south Florida. We spent one week here, then one week in the Everglades, and finally another week here with Mom & Dad Woods. Our first week here provided relief from the preparations and travel required to make the transition from our former life. We relaxed and enjoyed the company of our hosts. Last week we took our little Ford Focus and tent and headed southeast. We had heard of hurricane damage at the Park, but didn’t realize that Flamingo was closed. It was a struggle getting our backcountry permit, but we got it and spent three days exploring the Hells Bay land and water area of mangrove, mahogany, and weakly brackish lakes and channels. We looked for birds along the Trail, in the Park, and in the Miami area. We saw crocodiles at Flamingo that had survived the storm and the gray salt and marl residue left by it. We returned to the Ft. Myers area tired and bug bitten, but happy having enjoyed the magnificence of the sawgrass glades, hardwood hammocks, and the stately winterbare cypress strands of south Florida that remain in between the traffic clogged roads and uncontrolled development of the coasts and even the more northern interior areas.

This week we made two day trips, one across the Devils Garden, the Okeechobee shoreline and the sugar district to Loxahatchee Refuge and another to Ft. Desoto Park at St. Petersburg. We also visited Ding Darling Refuge on Sanibel Island and Bunche Beach near Siesta Bay. Our mail finally arrived and it took a day to take care of business. I put off working on the taxes for another week. We celebrated my birthday and Mom & Dad Woods anniversary. Today we took a boat ride with friends to see the Estero Island Beach Club from the Gulf. We have enjoyed watching the February moon appear and expand drifting away from the sun. We loved the silence of Pearl Bay where we tented on a Park Service “chickee” miles from the nearest land road. We gloried in bird sign and two young eagles engaged in harsh pursuit of a fish carrying osprey. We have seen peregrine, merlin, and kestrel in south Florida this month. A series of cold fronts has provided brisk and glorious weather for exploring this region.

So I'm now in my fourth week...scary. I'm excited to be more than half done. I'm having a really good time here and am really happy with the program, but I know that in a few weeks I will definitely be ready to leave and to see the family. The salmon tonight had a really great mango sauce I'm going to have to try and make once I get home. They sell their cookbook here so it'll be interesting to see if I'm able to make the food as gourmet as they serve it. The chocolate tofu is seriously to die for. Exercising is becoming more and more of a habit, but because we do it for so long every day...I'm finding the need to jump from machine to machine to the pool in order to get as much time in as I want to.
